Evolve Chile International
Tuesday March 9, 2010
As the Evolve Chile crew makes it way through Colorado to meet up with campers and teams from the Rocky Mountain state- evolvechile.com is attracting campers from all corners of the earth. Thanks to the miracle known as the World Wide Web- camp this summer is gonna be quite the international scene. It seems like alot of campers and parents are stoked on the idea of coming to ski/snowboard and participate in community service to help the local communities that we visit.
Aside from community service, all Evolve Chile campers will have the opportunity to practice and learn Spanish during and after a full day of skiing and snowboarding. How does this work?
1. The first program is our “Immersion Program” where campers are encouraged to use Spanish throughout the trip. Our staff (some of whom are fluent in Spanish) will speak to campers in Spanish (at their level), teach new words or local slang, and promote Spanish use at meals and during activity times. This happens as a default of skiing/snowboarding at Evolve Chile. If you’re coming to Chile from another South American country or you speak Spanish at home- we will encourage you to speak and practice the language with other campers.
2. Our second program is our ‘Immersion + Lessons Programs’. Campers can enjoy a full day of skiing/ snowboarding, and at the end of the day they will join a group of 5-6 Evolve campers in private Spanish lessons organized by Evolve Chile. Campers still have time to relax, eat dinner with the group, shower and join the group for other activities at night. The lessons last about 1-1.5 hrs. For any camper who is looking to improve their Spanish there is no better way than to immerse in the language in the day time, and then follow that up with structured lessons in the evening. Homework is given- but is totally optional. There is no additional cost for this program.
Evolve Chile Camp Update
Tuesday March 2, 2010
Dear Evolve Chile Campers and Families
As most of you know, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Chile early Saturday morning. Daniel and I and the whole Evolve Chile crew extend our deepest sympathies to all Chileans, and to anyone affected by this natural disaster.
Over the last three days we’ve received hundreds of emails from Evolve Chile campers and families asking about the situation in Chile. We are relieved to report that all our friends, families and colleagues in the country are safe. Thanks to the fact that many of Chile’s buildings and infrastructure were built to withstand earthquakes, the preparation of its emergency response teams, and the strength of its people, a much larger crisis has been avoided.
At this time we still intend to run Evolve Chile this July and August. We anticipate that in the next five months conditions in most of the country will have returned to normal. However, over the next few weeks, we will speak to Canadian and American officials in Chile, monitor the news and, if necessary, make whatever itinerary changes are needed in order to run a safe Camp in 2010. Safety remains our number one priority.
Thousands of Chilean people rely on the ski and snowboard industries for their livelihood, and many families benefit greatly from the money Evolve spends in Chile every year. Additionally, we are proud to announce that this year Evolve will donate 5% of all the Camp fees for 2010 to local schools and charities.
For some time we have been planning a new community service program as part of our activities in Chile this summer. Tomorrow (March 3, 2010) is the date planned for the official announcement. This program is intended to aid local schools in the ski towns we visit. Of course, now more than ever, our help in these communities will be especially important and appreciated. Before Camp starts, you are encouraged to collect clothing to bring with you for donation while in Chile this summer. During Camp, campers and staff can participate in the community service programs that are being planned by Evolve.
Please continue to email us or call 416-619-4581 if you have any questions.
From Chile ’s national anthem: “Majestic is the white mountain”. We are hopeful it will be forever.
Thanks, Jeff Richmond

Vancouver 2010 Halfpipe Finals,
Friday February 19, 2010
After watching Shaun White wave the US Flag following his domination of the Half pipe competition at Cypress Mountain in North Vancouver, I couldn’t help but wonder if the competition could have been more competitive had some other riders not fallen.
Without taking anything away from White’s eye-popping, dominating performance – there was one rider who I thought had an unbelievable method to his style and had he not fallen – he could’ve competed for a silver or bronze medal. The rider I’m speaking of is Kazuhiro Kokubo of Japan.
Kokubo, dressed in Rasta colors throughout the event and with dreads dangling from beneath his helmet was so fluid in his maneuvers. He was such a treat to watch. Kokubo had a faulty landing on his double cork on the second run and could only manage eighth, but I will definitely be following his career from this point forward. Just prior to the games, Kokubo got himself into a little trouble after he wore Japan’s official Olympic uniform on his way to Vancouver in a sloppy and baggy way. Here’s an excerpt from Japan Today ‘‘if you can’t land the double cork, you’re finished. I was able to show my style, so I have no regrets,’’ said Kokubo… ‘‘I went through a lot but I am just glad that the fans rooted for me till the end. It’s good that I stuck with my style throughout.’‘
It’s all about style with this guy. I love that in a competitive athlete.
Shawn White wins gold!
Thursday February 18, 2010
Yesterday was a great day at the office, we watched the qualifying rounds of the mens half pipe and orchestrated a massive Chilean dinner to keep us going until the mens final last night.
In defending his Olympic halfpipe title, Shawn White through it down with perfection at Cypress Mountain. White scored 48.4 out of a possible 50 on his second run, punctuating his dominance by landing the Double McTwist 1260 at the finish.
Come down to Chile this summer and train to be the next Olympian gold medalist!
